The economy has recovered half of the output lost during lockdown.

The Bank of England’s chief economist, Andy Haldane, said that there had been a bounce-back in activity and that “so far it has been a ‘V’”.

His view, given to Treasury select committee yesterday, contrasts with the Bank’s governor, Andrew Bailey, who has been a lot less positive.
