More than a thousand stores have closed since the start of the year, with hundreds of retail jobs being lost each day.

Analysis by the Centre for Retail Research shows that about 850 jobs have been lost from the sector each working day since the start of the year. It covers insolvencies by retailers with ten or more stores.

It says that the hollowing out of the high street and job losses seen so far are “the tip of the iceberg”.
